What
is the origin of "tilt-up"?
The term itself was coined in the late 1940's, but the origin of the methodology
dates back possibly 2,000 years ago, when Roman builders discovered it would
be easier to cast concrete on the ground, then tilt it into position, than
to build two wood forms, place concrete between them, and then remove the
forms. Over the years many advancements have been made, including the evolution
to reinforced concrete in the early 1900's.
What are the primary advantages of tilt-up?
- More economical - Pouring concrete on-site circumvents having to transport heavy walls.
- Speed of construction - The typical elapsed time to a building shell is only about eight to ten weeks.
- Durability
- Most older buildings, even those from the 1940's, show few
signs of age. - Low maintenance costs - About the only thing that needs to be done is a new coat of paint every six to eight years.
- Fire Resistance - Concrete is an excellent choice for fire resistance. For example, a 6-1/2" thick wall has a four hour fire resistance rating.
- Lower insurance rates - The fire resistance of concrete tilt-up walls results in lower insurance premiums.
